Hard to believe living in this era of all things digital that sitting listening to the radio for four hours can be SO rewarding but that's what WXPN'S monthly homage to the 80's "Land Of The Lost" is to me.
I've been a loyal listener to XPN for at least eight years now and I often heard the djs mention Robert Drake's monthly trip back into the 80's but never took the time to check it out{bows head in shame!}
Fate intervened in August 2011,following the infamous Berlin show at World Cafe Live where Robert was due to dj b4 Berlin but didn't since Terri Nunn decided she didn't want 80's music b4 they went on stage I was now faced w/ an hour to kill b4 the show.....
As luck would have it I struck up a conversion w/ the person standing to my right,Eric a regular in the "Land Of The Lost" chatroom and also "Sex Dwarf" the other monthly 80's extravaganza that Robert Drake hosts, upon leaving World Cafe Live I bumped into Eric again outside who was talking w/ Marilyn another "Land Of The Lost" chatroom devotee and also co dj w/ Robert at "Sex Dwarf" if this was the universes way of telling me to start checking out both nites I was listening....
W/in a few weeks I was checking out my first "Land Of The Lost" and a week later my first "Sex Dwarf".....I haven't looked back since!!!
For an 80's music lover like myself "Land Of The Lost" is mana from heaven four hours of 80's music that always leaves me wanting more, but as I've been saying since becoming a regular twenty months ago if you're only listening to "Land Of The Lost" you're only getting half the fun,the chatroom is a riot, usually a dozen or so regulars can be found in there each final Friday of the month swapping good natured banter w/ eachother, such is my love of the chatroom that when I discovered my pc was on the blink this past Friday rather than just stay home and listen to LOTL on the radio I made the hour long commute from home to work to slip into my office and fire up the radio and pc..........
To my utter chagrin I discovered my access to WXPN had been blocked.....AGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It speaks volumes of my love of ''Land Of The Lost" and the chatroom I would even consider going back to work just to be in the chatroom and while being blocked was a kick in the teeth thanks to the "Land Of The Lost" Facebook page I was able to be somewhat interactive and managed to get Robert to play "East At Easter" by Simple Minds which seemed fitting since it was Good Friday afterall!
I'm not about to type the 51 songs that Robert played,if you're so inclined to see what filled those four hours go to the "Land Of The Lost" Facebook and check it out for yourself but here's a dozen bands that were featured:
The Cure
Japan
Depeche Mode
Siouxsie & The Banshees
Berlin
Bauhaus
Psychedelic Furs
Joy Division
Duran Duran
Simple Minds
OMD
Echo & The Bunnymen
See you next month!
