DJSC

W/ my beloved "Sex Dwarf" coming to the end of it's illustrious ten year reign the need for another Philly 80's dance party was top of my list come the turn of the year.....enter DJSC.
D for Depeche Mode,J for Joy Division,S for The Smiths and C for The Cure,w/ this cavet, bands affilited w/ those four,so you can throw in Yazoo and Erasure,New Order,Morrissey and Siouxsie & The Banshees plus the featured band of each month, last month was Human League and this month was Duran Duran.

I have to say that when I heard that DJSC was going to be on the fourth Wednesday of each month I wasn't sure if I could make it happen, cursed w/ having to be up at the ungodly hour of 5.30am the prospect of dancing till 2am,getting home at 3am and crashing out by 3.30am only to be up again in 2 hours didn't seem like my idea of fun,nor did leaving at 12am after only 2 hours so I've been scheduling days off for the following day as frankly at almost 50 these 22 hour days are kicking my butt.....that said I've throughly enjoyed the past two events at Silk City at 5th and Spring Garden between 10pm and 2am and I eagerly look forward to  April 24th where it looks like OMD will be the featured group.

No Brainer

Let's be honest, there are dozens of great movie soundtrack cds out there and in time I'll feature some of my favourites but it was a slam dunk to make this my first.
From the 2006 movie "Starter For 10" which is set in 1985 comes this 15 track all killer,no filler soundtrack.
Ok as a die hard Cure fan any soundtrack w/ five of their songs on it will always court great favour w/ yours truly but frankly this is one soundtrack I can never get enough of....and the movie isn't too shabby either!

In Between Days-The Cure
Love My Way-Psychedelic Furs
Wonderful Life-Black
Ever Fallen In Love{W/ Someone You Shouldn't ve}-Buzzcocks
Six Different Ways-The Cure
Situation-Yazoo
Ace Of Spades-Motorhead

Sharp Dressed Man

Maybe it was reading John Taylor's autobiography and maybe it's the prospect of Duran Duran being the featured band this month at DJSC that got me thinking about Power Station and ergo Robert Palmer, whatever it was I listened to "Addictions" one and two on Friday
My first introduction to Robert Palmer came via the single "Johnny And Mary" in 1980 followed by the single"Looking For Clues" both off the "Clues" album,years later I realized I'd more than likely heard his debut hit "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley" 5 years earlier w/out realizing it was him,ditto for his 1978 hit"Every Kinda People" and then a year later  w/"Bad Case Of Loving You{Doctor Doctor}
In 1982 he had his first top 20 hit w/ "Some Guys Have All The Luck" although it was the Rod Stewart version 2 years later that really caught my ear and lodged in between was the minor hit "You Are In My System"

Game changer #1 came via his collaboration w/ John and Andy Taylor of Duran Duran plus Chic drummer Tony Thompson aka The Power Station in 1985 and two top ten hits in the US w/ "Some Like It Hot" and the T Rex cover of "Get It On{Bang A Gong} the album went Gold in the Palmer's native UK while it went Platinum here in the US.
Sadly Palmer didn't tour w/ Power Station here in the US preferring to head back to the studio to work on his upcoming solo album"Riptide",I happened to be here in America in August of 85 when The Power Station performed at the old Spectrum w/ Michael Des Barres on vocals and OMD opened for them!!!!
The first two singles off "Riptide" didn't cash in on The Power Station success although I always felt the leadoff single "Discipline Of Love" should have been a bigger hit than it was, maybe it needed a catchy video........

Game changer#2 "Those Videos" for the  following singles"Addicted To Love" and "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On".....oh the delicious irony!!! and "Simply Irresistible....more irony!!!.
Why his label at the time the always progressive Chris Blackwell ran Island Records didn't issue a video album or VHS compilation{86-88 was a little pre dvd}is beyond me,those videos have burnt their way into my psyche and I can't hear those songs w/ getting a strong mental image of the videos, sexist or sexy your call,I know which side of the fence I'm on!!!!

"Heavy Nova" in 88 continued to produce great songs if not huge hits "Early In The Morning" "She Makes My Day" and "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" b4 two final top ten hits in the UK in the 90's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonite" w/ UB40 in 1990 and "Mercy Mercy Me" a year later

A second stab at success w/ Power Station didn't catch the publics imagination 1996's "Living In Fear" minus John Taylor on bass{but replaced by Bernard Edwards of Chic} didn't have the clout the previous effort from eleven years earlier. and sadly Palmer passed away at only 54 in 2003,he may be gone but his music, and those videos will live on forever.

That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore

Lost in the shuffle of the past few days was the news Morrissey cancelled his remaining 22 date US tour including the April 6th Philly show at The Tower that I'd gone through hoops to get tickets for!!!
Mozz who has already suffered double pneumonia and a stomach ulcer on his US tour claims he was forced to pull the plug on the remaining dates as his recent ill health on previous dates had had soaked up all the insurance money.
While I wish Morrissey a speedy recovery to full health it's a bitter pill for me and the rest of his American fans who had hoped to catch him on this leg of the US tour.

Highland Fling

It's said "there are no coincidences" on Tuesday when I discovered Simple Minds and Ultravox were playing together in London at the O2 Arena in November it just so happened that "Neapolis" was my lunchtime cd.........yesterday after I booked my ticket for that show I happened to have "The Crossing" Big Country's stunning 1983 debut album as my cd du jour, throw in Annie Lennox and you have four of the greatest Scottish vocalist ever or at least from the 80's which to me is the only era that really matters.

I was a fan of Stuart Adamson's first band The Skids who came to  my attention in 1979 w/ the hit "Into The Valley" and who's first two albums"Scared To Dance" and "Days In Europa" set the tone for the late 70s early 80s{interesting tit bit of trivial,Rusty Egan drummed on Days In Europa"!!!}b4 Adamson left in 1980 to form Big Country a year later.
When "Fields Of Fire" hit the airwaves in 1983 the stage was set for an alternative to all the synthesizer music that had been popular in the early 80's,it's no coincidence the likes of Simple Minds,U2 and Echo & The Bunnymen began to enjoy success at this time.

I defy anyone to listen to "The Crossing" and not be blown away by Stuart Adamson's guitar playing, the intricate intro to the closing track "Porrohman" should bring tears to a glass eye alone.
It was once said that Stuart Adamson  could"make the guitar sound like a bagpipe"I wasn't sure if this was a put down or a complement,I took it as the latter as for me no band personified that highland celtic sound as well as Big Country period but especially on their first three albums,"The Crossing""Steeltown" and "The Seer"
Since Stuart's tragic suicide in 2001 there's always been a tinge of saddnes and sorrow when listening to Big Country these days for me,as Simple Minds have reestablished themselves as a major force I can't help but feel that Big Country mightn't have caught some of that splash and while it's admirable that Mike Peters of The Alarm has helped keep the memory and music of Big Country alive it's just not the same w/out Stuart and I say this a huge fan of both Mike Peters and The Alarm.

The final word on Stuart Adamson's greatness comes from U2's The Edge, who when delivering the eulogy at Stuart's funeral said and I quote"Big Country wrote the songs I wish U2 could write"a fitting epitaph

See You Jimmy!!!

I'm still recovering from the gobsmacking this one produced!!!
Together on the same bill,Ultravox and Simple Minds......AWESOME!!!
Factor in this shindig will go down on November 30th,St Andrew's Day makes it an even more mouthwatering prospect....no word if I'll wear a kilt!
One slight issue....the show is in London at the O2 Arena..........
It's just after my 50th b'day and frankly I can't think of a more unique way to celebrate that landmark plus I'm overdue a trip"across the pond" it's almost 10 years since I last showed my face so watch this space but I think it's going to happen!!!!

A Recomendation For St Paddy's Day

If you're looking for something a little different this St Patrick's Day I whole heartedly suggest checking out The Petrol Emotion.
Sadly now defunct this 5 piece that rose from the ashes of the awesome Undertones will always be held in high esteem by yours truly, when there's more time at hand I will honour Steve Mack and company w/ a longer article but for now trust me That Petrol Emotion were, are and always will be the "dog's bollocks".

Welcome To The Pleasure Dome

You can add John Taylor's recent autobiography "In The Pleasure Groove" to my list of books read in the last eighteen months.
In fairness to "Nigel" he was already preaching to the choir, not only was I a former teenage Duran Duran fan but John was probably my favourite of the fab five,I only have to see his brief yet hysterical cameo in the Arcadia video for "The Flame" to begin laughing out loud!!

I'll always take first hand accounts over someone else writing about a band or artist I like hence why "Notorious"The Biography by Steve Malins is way down my list of "must read" books and why Andy Taylor's "Wild Boy"My Life In Duran Duran is closer to the top.
I enjoyed John's light hearted writing style covering his childhood in the Midlands to the forming of Duran Duran along w/ best friend Nick Rhodes and the meteoric rise to the top that Duran Duran enjoyed between 1981 and 1985 and also the downside of their rise to the top.
His open honesty about female groupies on the road to handling his addictions came across as matter of fact not bragging and his decision to leave the band after "The Wedding Album" in  1993 only to bump into former band mate Simon Le Bon by chance in  LA restaurant and get the original line up back together{albeit briefly for Andy Taylor} for "Astronaut" in 2004 is all here.

His "I'm in the band" encounter w/ a non plussed immigration officer at JFK airport in 1981 on the bands first American tour is a personal highlight for me in a book that was hard to put down once I picked it up.

Told You So!!!!

Nobody likes a clever clogs, know it all, told you so type however that said I did predict on Facebook yesterday morning that w/ Depeche Mode scheduled to be in New York City for their appearance on "Letterman" the chances of their US tour being announced were better than average...........
Mid morning social media was rampant w/ Delta Machine World Tour North American dates, kicking off in Detroit on August 22nd and finishing up in  Phoenix on October 8th....let's have a Black Celebration tonite!!!!
As is the norm these days no Philly date{BOO!!!!!} but should no Philly or Atlantic City House Of Blues tour date show up I think a road trip to Jones Beach in Wantagh New York on September 8th is looking good.
Let the fun and games begin w/ the pre sale and general public ticket sales set for April 1st and 6th till then here are ten Depeche Mode favs I'd love to hear on the set list for the upcoming tour, post tour it'll be interesting to see how many if any of them get performed when I hopefully see them!

Shout
Get The Balance Right
Nothing
Stripped
But Not Tonight
Higher Love
Route 66
Question Of Time
Enjoy The Silence

Full Of Eastern* Promise *Ok South East London Promise,But Promise None The Less!!

The words overlooked and underrated could apply to several 80's bands two that spring to mind include That Petrol Emotion and  Catherine Wheel, throw the word influential into the mix and one band that ticks all the above boxes is Japan.
I forget when exactly Japan first came across my radar either 1979 or 1980,I had a friend growing up John who was a year older than me and thus more likely to discover the "cooler" bands first,The Cure,Ultravox and B 52's spring to mind but it was Japan who struck a major cord w/ yours truly.

Maybe it was because they were "local boys made good"the stories of them infamously being expelled from nearby Catford Boys High School  for their dress sence and homage to all things New York Dolls were enough to win me over even if their first two albums "Adolescent Sex" and "Obscure Alternatives" did little to garner favour w/ the always difficult to please British music press.
While not a big fan of either album there were some great moments on both that went a long way to making up "Assemblage" a compilation album later released by then label Hansa but thing really began to happen in 79 w/ their  third offering "Quiet Life"

Prior to it's release a one off collaboration w/ the legendary Giorgio Moroder would produce the classic "Life In Tokyo" an indication of the direction Japan would now take, the 12'' mix of which can be found on "Assemblage"
"Quite Life" was a major departure from the first two albums in both sound and look but it was the 1980 effort"Gentlemen Take Polaroids" that would lift them into the limelight of the just below the surface New Romantic movement that had internal politics not ripped the band apart two years later Japan would surely have gone onto great success than what they did achieve.

While I'm not the last word on all things 80's music I will say this if you don't own a copy of their 1981 magnus opus "Tin Drum" your 80's collection is incomplete,"Tin Drum" is one of the quintessential 80's albums and it gave Japan their biggest chart success w/ the most unlikeliest of singles "Ghosts" which reached #5 in the singles charts.
"Ghosts" ranks right up there w/"Nightporter" off of "Polaroids" for the best Japan song ever,I can't tell you how often I'd be sequestered in my bedroom w/ the lights off playing both albums back to back,w/ David Sylvian's velvet baritone voice singing the words"could I ever explain, this feeling of love it just lingers on,the fear in my heart keeps telling me which way to turn"  I was just blown away by the romance of it all.....sadly wasted on a then 18 year old boy but none the less powerful stuff!!

Sadly b4 the end of 1982 it all came to a head for Japan, the internal bickering between band members meant they called it a day which was a crushing blow but did mean solo projects to look forward to,but the wounds of the split were still there to be seen no David Sylvian on "Titles'' Mick Karn's debut solo effort and vice versa on "Brilliant Trees" David Sylvian's solo debut two years later, meanwhile both Steve Jensen and Richard Barbieri played on both!!!
However a thaw in the feud three years later saw David Sylvian lend his vocals to two tracks of off Karn's sophomore effort"Dreams Of Reasons Produce Monsters","Buoy" is one of my all time favorite "Japan" songs and show up on David's "Everything And Nothing" retrospective.

The often rumoured Japan reunion did happen in 1991 albeit under the moniker of Rain Tree Crow, the first collaboration w/ all four members since "Tin Drum" some 10 years earlier.....however it would prove to be a short lived affair, more one off than reunion as the bickering that had broken them up in the first place resurfaced, the fact that Karn,Jensen and Barbieri were out voted by Sylvain that the name Rain Tree Crow and not Japan be used perhaps underlined the power struggle w/ the foursome.

We would enjoy some solo efforts from David Sylvian and Mick Karn while Barbieri and Jansen would form The Dolphin Brothers and also work closely w/ Mick Karn.
Steve Jensen can often be found working w/ David Sylvian which should come as no great surprise given he's David's younger brother and Richard Barbieri would later lend his considerable keyboard/synth prowess to prog rockers Porcupine Tree.
The list of musicians who've asked Mick Karn to work w/ them reads like a whos who,Midge Ure,Kate Bush,Gary Numan, and Pete Murphy and all of them expressed great sorrow at the untimely death of Mick two years ago.

To think we'll never hear anyone manipulate those fretless bass sounds like Mick did defies all reasoning and I was touched that of all the epitaphs given to him in the press after losing his battle w/ cancer John Taylor of Duran Duran  called Karn quote"one of the great visual and sound stylists of the late 70s/early 80s".
For those of you who missed Japan's all too brief career I recommend "Assemblage" and "Exorcising Ghosts" as two great places to start discovering them and for those of you like me who miss watching Mick Karn on stage the dvd "The Best Of Japan" which feature some but sadly not all of their 82 Hammersmith Odean "Oil On Canvas" farewell continues to be a treat for the eyes, the ears, the heart and soul.
