Remember Music Videos?

Cast your mind way, way, way back when MTV stood for Music Tele Vision and  they actually showed such a thing as music videos.....I realize it's from a bygone era of Beta Max,Walkmans,Rubix Cubes etc etc but such a thing did exist......I know it's hard to believe.
MTV hit the airwaves here in 81 even though not everyone could get access to it,meanwhile back in dear old Blighty there was no such thing,we relied on Top Of The Pops maybe showing a music video, the advent of the Video Juke Box in pubs was a saving grace for me,I spent many a happy couple of hours in a public house that had such a contraption, what was the point of bands making these wonderful videos if you couldn't watch them??

On my first trip to America in 85 I was treated to "Friday Night Videos" on NBC at 12.30am,90 minutes of music videos this was just unheard of back home,a  whole show devoted to music videos....no wonder I wanted to move here....of course when I did make the move in 87 NBC cut it from 90 mins to an hour and pushed it back to 1.30am but still it was an hour of music videos!!!
It would be a while b4 I finally got cable by which time MTV had added a two hour show showcasing quote unquote "alternative music" called simply "120 Minutes" beginning in 86 but at midnite on a Sunday.
Between years of no cable, then cable but no vcr or even worse having to work the 11pm -7am graveyard shift I missed more "120 Minutes" shows than I saw
By 2000 it had found a new home on MTV2 but w/in three was cancelled, video may've killed the radio star but it seemed MTV had now killed off "120 Minutes"

Thankfully these days it can be found airing three times a week on VH1 Classic, albeit at 4am but thanks to my trusty vcr I can preset it to record and sit back and watch when it's convenient for me.
It's fun to catch old videos or maybe videos I haven't seen b4 or for a while,in a recent edition these were some of the videos that had me waxing lyrical for days gone by

Kicking Off W/ Killing Joke

Last nite at Union Transfer saw the beginning of what I've dubbed "Philly's 80's Palooza"
Between last nite and Sept 4th over a dozen 80's acts have announced dates here in the City Of Brotherly Love, talk about "start as you mean to go on!"

To mark their 35th anniversary which in of it's self is a remarkable fete Jez and Geordie are on the road to promote their retrospective "The Singles Collection" a audio feast of Killing Joke songs from their 1980 self titled debut through last years "MMXII" there is a little something for everyone on this tour.
My introduction to "Notting Hill's finest" was 85's "Night Time" which yielded three kick arse singles "Eighties" "Love Like Blood" and "Kings And Queens" of which the first two songs made last nites set list,it would be churlish to whine that "Kings & Queens" not making it,afterall there were plenty of tunes from their  15 studio albums to make up the setlist from  "Requiem" "Wardance" and "The Wait" off of "Killing Joke to"Corporate Elect" off of "MMXII.

If the kink in my neck today is anything to go by Killing Joke have lost none of their vim and vigor since they first assaulted our ears w/ their "Turn To Red" EP. back in 79,miss them on this tour at your peril!

Thinking Inside The Box

Like most of my favourite 80's bands my Thompson Twins collection was mainly vinyl, the seminal albums "Quick Step & Side Kick" and "Into The Gap" plus a ton of 12'' singles,I kept telling myself I'd upgrade "Side Kick" and "Gap" to cd but never seemed to follow through w/ it.
Then came the reissues w/ bonus tracks.....this seemed too good an offer to pass up but when you have a "want list" that resembles I 95 it's not always easy to get every cd you have your heart set on...........
When Edsel Records{the same people who reissued the Blancmange albums on cd} put out  the 8 cd Thompson Twins Box I was all over that like a coat of paint!!!

Asides from now having "A Product Of" "Set" and "Here's To Future Days" in my collection I also had all my old 12'' singles too plus being "reunited" w/ some favourite album tracks I hadn't heard in eons....talk about Xmas come early when I bought it!!!
Here's a cd/album review.

A Product Of
I love the lead off track "When I See You" which has featured on "Land Of The Lost" a couple of times.....but the rest of the album leaves me cold,in fairness when I bought the box set it was my first exposure to the album so maybe after a few more plays it will grow on me...or not

Set
This is more like it! I cut my teeth w/ the Thompson Twins on "In The Name Of Love" and "Runaway" in 82 although it remains a mystery how neither were hits in the UK charts, my early clubbing days introduced me to the wonders of Tom,Alannah and Joe.
"In The Name Of Love" was a #1 in the US Dance charts.....{haven't we covered this in previous blog entries!!??} and along w/ "Runaway" both have the extended remixes on the reissue.
Interesting footnote, one Thomas Dolby features on the synth on three tracks:"The Rowe" "Runaway" and "Fool's Gold"...as if I didn't have enough reasons to be giddy about "Runaway"!!!!

Quick Step & Side Kick
The game changer for the Thompson Twins, this was the album that probably introduced  a lot of people to them.
Ripe w/ hit singles "Lies'' "Love On Your Side" ''We Are Detective" and "Watching"  which all show up w/ their subsequent mixes here the album also feature two of my all time favourite Thompson Twins songs "If You Were Here" and "Kamikaze","If  You Were Here" shows up on the soundtrack to "16 Candles"....which I also believe has also been mentioned on this blog!

Into The Gap
Another album w/ hit singles to boot, ''Hold Me Now" ''Doctor! Doctor!" "You Take Me Up"and "Sister Of Mercy"
"The Gap" was also released as a single but somewhat surprisingly not in their native UK which didn't stop yours truly hunting it down on 12'' vinyl as it was a kick arse track and the bside "Out Of The Gap" a medley of previous singles, thankfully featured on the boxed set.
While not singles I still adore "Day After Day" ''Storm Of The Sea" and "Who Can Stop The Rain".

Here's To Future Days
The beginning of the end for the Twins,Joe Leeway left after this album and I didn't feel they were ever the same after that
I hate to admit this but I'd clean forgotten about "Lay Your Hands On Me" until the other day when I played the whole cd,such a great song, for me the last truly great Thompson Twins single
Other singles were "Don't Mess W/ Doctor Dream" "King For A Day" and the Beatles cover "Revolution"

Even though Tom and Alannah continued after Joe's departure it just wasn't happening anymore, there were a few more singles {but no real hits} and a few more albums but following "Queer" in 91 they called it day.
For me the boxed set represents their finest hour and serves as a great audio history of one of the 80's great groups, yes they had their critics but how many bands did Madonna dance on stage w/ at Live Aid at RFK Stadium in 85?

For Boston

In the wake of yesterdays horrific scenes from the Boston Marathon I dug out my 2005 "For Boston" marathon mix tape.
In 03 when I ran the New York City marathon I made a mix tape and then again in 04 for the Ocean City Drive marathon, and following Boston 05 I also made one for the Athens marathon.
Asides from something to listen to on my way to the marathon and back home again the Marathon Mix served as a musical reminder of the training runs that lead upto marathon day and also kept the memories alive long after crossing the finish line.

The criteria for a Marathon Mix was threefold, songs about running{der!!}songs that could inspire me during the weeks of build up and the subsequent long runs needed to tackle 26.2 miles or Battle Anthems as they became known and finally songs pertaining to the location of said marathon, here's my musical homage to Boston 05

For Boston-Dropkick Murphys
The Road-The Alarm
One Vision-Queen
Are You Ready?-Thin Lizzy
A New England-Kirsty MacColl
Union Jack-Big Audio Dynamite
Can't Stop Now-Keane

Just Deserts

Nobody was a bigger fan of  Blancnmange{the band not the desert!} than me back in the day,I owned all three albums and all eleven 12'' singles between  1982 and 1986.
I lucked out in November 81 when I caught Depeche Mode on their "Speak & Spell" tour, not only was it the only tour to feature Vince Clark{he quit the band the day after their November 16th show at The Lyceum} but also Blancmange opened for them.

I'd missed out on their debut "Irene And Mavis" EP and the now famous "Some Bizzare" album which featured the likes of Depeche Mode,Soft Cell,The The and B Movie but was quick to pounce on their debut single "God's Kitchen"/I've Seen The Word".
Their follow up single "Feel Me" fared better in the charts but it took their third single "Living On The Ceiling" to finally give them a top 20 hit, hitting #7 and also broke them in the US reaching #52 on the "Hot Dance Club"
Perhaps it was the mix of synths and sittar that made "Living On The Ceiling" such a hit and while the early 80's saw me and dance clubs non compatible I made the most of any opportunity my father was out which was most evenings to turn our living room into my very own Studio 54 so I could "get my groove on" to the songs that loved and bought on 12'' vinyl on  a weekly basis,I'm reasonably confident his footprint in my arse was not the fashion accessory my wardrobe required!!!

In 83 they released one more track off their "Happy Families" LP "Waves" a slower song than the two previous singles but still earned them another top 20 hit #19 b4 releasing two singles off the forthcoming sophomore effort "Mange Tout" first "Blind Vision" another top ten hit in the UK #10 and also another hit on the US "Hot Dance Club" reaching #3 b4 "That's Love That It Is" which should've done better in the UK top 40 #33 in my opinion as it rocked at least American audiences were hip to it as it reached #16 on the "Hot Dance Club"

As if to underline how fickle the pop business can be in 84 b4 they released "Mange Tout" "Don't Tell Me" gave them their third but sadly final UK top 10 hit #10 while here in the US it only reached #44.
I will never forget the nite I saw them at Hammersmith Palais on the "Mange Tout" tour it was May 24th the nite after Spurs had won a dramatic penalty shoot out to win the Ufea Cup,I was still in celebratory mood and Blancmage were in rare form in fact that show was filmed for their "Hello Good Evening" dvd which is on my list but beware it's another of those pesky NTSC format dvds which means you'll need an all region dvd player to watch it but worth it just for Neil Arthur's brilliant comeback when someone from the audience threw an empty cigarette box at him "no thanks,I've just given up" he replied in his unique Lancashire accent which underlined the humour that ran through Blancmage's music.

In a rather ballsy move they covered an Abba tune "The Day Before You Came" which I rank it as one of the great cover versions of all time and would prove to be their last hit single reaching #22.
One sensed the wheels of synthpop were beginning to turn slower come 1985,"What's Your Problem"  only just scrapped into the UK top 40 at #40 while "Lose Your Love" could only get to #77 but did give Neil Arthur and Stephen Luscombe a final hit on the "Hot Dance Club" reaching #2,I always though "Lose Your Love" was pretty kick arse

In 86 w/ their third album "Believe You Me" only reaching #54 after ''Happy Families" had gone to #30 and "Mange Tout" had gone to #8 in 1982 and 1984 respectively the writing was on the wall "What's Your Problem" which might've been a veiled question to the record buying British public  stalled at #71 and not long after that Blancmange called it a day.......

As of yet I still haven't picked up their 2011 reunion cd "Blanc Burn" I did however jump all over the reissue of their first three albums on cd which also featured the 12'' remixes of most if not all eleven of their singles,at least when I'm dancing my living room these days I don't have to keep one eye out for my disapproving father as my living room can be Studio 54 or any any 80's dance venue of my choosing

Take A Bow

Earlier in the year I upgraded my ABC "Lexicon Of Love" album and Tears For Fears "The Hurting" album to cd,this set me off on a tangent about great debut albums, the above ten  are just the first ten that sprang to mind, this is one of those lists that can be done over and over.
Before the "purists" are all over me like a rash I'm fully aware that "Dare" was not the first Human League album but after the split that saw Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh form Heaven 17 and Phil Oakey and  Adrian Wright join forces w/ Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley the classic "Dare" album was released....it was,is and always will be a beautiful thing!

It's As Easy As......

Earlier in the year I finally upgraded my old vinyl copy of ABC's stunning debut album "The Lexicon Of Love" to cd.
W/out a doubt ONE of the classic debut albums of the 80's{released June 25th 1982} "Lexicon Of Love" would not only make Martin Fry and ABC household names but would also yield four UK Top 20 hits for the Sheffield band "Tears Are Not Enough" which was released in 81 prior to the album and then followed by "Poison Arrow" "The Look Of Love" and "All Of My Heart"{Poison Arrow & The Look Of Love were also hits in the US Billboard 100 reaching #25 and #14 respectively}

For a hormone raging teenager the lyrics of "Valentine's Day" summed up my love life...or lack thereof back then:
When the postman don't call on Valentine's Day and Santa Clause don't come on a Christmas Day
That umbrella won't work on a rainy day don't ask me.I already know
W/ your heart on parade and your heart on parole,I hope you find a sucker to buy that mink stole
School for scandal, guess who's enrolled? so ask me In already know
When I'm shaking a hand,I'm clenching a fist if you gave me a pound for the moments I missed
And I got dancing lessons for all the lips I should've kissed I'd be a millionaire I'd be a Fred Astaire.

Plus there was the classic line from "Poison Arrow"
I thought you loved me,but it seems you don't care
I care enough to know I could never love you"
Was it any wonder "Lexicon Of Love" was a near permanent fixture on my stereo?I'm not saying I played it over and over but I think my father knew that album off by heart!!!

My one regret w/ "Lexicon Of Love" was I didn't see that tour, sadly I lost my job that summer and frankly my meager unemployment cheque didn't keep me in concert tickets or albums to the level I was used to while working,I remember them doing multiple shows at Hammersmith Odean.
The one draw back of coming out of the blocks w/ a strong debut album is the follow up has to be just as good and sadly  "Beauty Stab" wasn't,that said the lead off single "That Was Then But This Is Now" remains one of my all time favourite songs and is a bonified "volume changer" when I hear it now almost  thirty years later.

My interest in ABC began to wain and I never bought any of their subsequent albums "How To Be A Zillionaire" "Alphabet City" or "Up" however since I enjoyed most of the singles those albums produced the 1990's compilation "Absolutely" was a given to own ,afterall who could resist the likes of ''{How To Be A}Millionaire" "Be Near Me" "When Smokey Sings" "The Night You Murdered Love" "King W/Out A Crown" or "One Better World"???

In fairness to Martin Fry he's done his best to keep ABC afloat,in 2004 the 2 disc deluxe  version of "Lexicon Of Love" was released, in 2009 ABC performed at The Royal Albert Hall w/  the BBC concert orchestra and last December on it's 30th anniversary 'The Lexicon Of Love" was performed in it's entirety w/ Anne Dudley once again at the helm of the orchestra at the Theater Royal Drury Lane in London let's face it nobody rocks the gold lame suit look like our Martin!!

Pretty In Pink

Ok so it's kind of a no brainer to feature "Pretty In Pink" right after my entry about Prom but hey,my blog my rules,I believe the Exit signs are clearly marked!!!!
Where John Hughes/Brat Pack movies are concerned "Pretty In Pink" ranks a solid second sandwiched in between "St Elmos Fire" in third and " The Breakfast Club" in first, but where John Hughes/Brat Pack Movie soundtracks are concerned "Pretty In Pink" is a bases loaded grand slam home run.

If You Leave-OMD
Technically when this album was released OMD were still going by their full name Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark and had had a string of hits but this really exposed them to wider audience, proof in point talk to someone who says they don't know OMD and mention "If You Leave" or "Pretty In Pink" and nine out of ten times they'll say "I know that song"

Left Of Center-Suzanne Vega
Yeah yeah I know, one mention of Suzanne Vega and people think of "My Name Is Luka" but there is more to Suzanne Vega than "Luka" and this is one of her best songs.....little tit bit of info, the piano at the end of this song is played by none other than Joe Jackson!

Get To Know Ya-Jesse Johnson
The one time guitarist in Morris Day's back up band The Time also featured on the "Breakfast Club" soundtrack w/ "Heart Too Hot To Hold" w/ Stephanie Spruill.

Do Wot You Do-Inxs
A previously unreleased Inxs track that would resurface two years later as the b side to "New Sensation" off the "Kick" album

Pretty In Pink-Psychedelic Furs
A minor hit when it was first released in 1981 off their sophomore album "Talk Talk Talk" reaching #43 in the UK charts it went to #18 five years later b4 "Midnight To Midnight" was  released w/ a remixed version of the original single a year later

Shellshock-New Order
Surprisingly absent from their 86 album release "Brotherhood" "Shellshock would appear a year later on the classic New Order compilation album "Substance".

Round Round-Belouis Some
Produced by Bernard Edwards of Chic fame,Belouis Some aka Neville Keighley enjoyed a short three album career but it was probably the success of his two previous singles "Imagination" and "Some People" that earned him the prestigious opening slot on the Queen,Big Country,Status Quo show at Knebworth in the summer of 86 following the movies release.

Wouldn't It Be Good-Danny Hutton Hitters
A cover of the Nik Kershaw hit Danny Hutton's previous and only other claim to fame was to be one of three lead singers of the band Three Dog Night, personally I'd have preferred to hear the Nik Kershaw version but then again movie soundtracks have always been a good forum for cover tunes.

Bring On The Dancing Horses-Echo & The Bunnymen
Recorded for the movie "Dancing Horses would become a hit for The Bunnymen later in the year when it was the only new song on the Bunnymen compilation album "Songs To Sing And Learn"

Please,Please,Please, Let Me Get What I Want-The Smiths
Originally the b side to "William It Was Really Nothing" it has now featured on the soundtracks to "Starter For Ten'' "{500}Days Of Summer" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", way to get your moneys worth of a song  that's  only 1.50 in length!!

Last Dance Act one

"I'm so glad you came I'm so glad you remembered to see how we're ending this last dance together
Expectant, too punctual but prettier than ever I really believe that this time it's forever"
Last Dance-The Cure

Thankfully Friday nite only signaled the end of Sex Dwarf at Club Fluid,we still have eight glorious months of Philly's premier New Wave dance party to enjoy but it did mark the final time we'd all gather at Club Fluid the home of Sex Dwarf since its inception almost ten years ago in August 2003.
Even for a relative newbie like me{Sept 2011} the sense of melancholy...and dare I add infinite sadness was apparent as we all knew after tonite we'd never enter or leave Club Fluid again.
At least the fact tonite was the annual Sex Dwarf Prom gave the evening a sense of grandeur as most people as is always the case when there's a theme at Sex Dwarf got into the spirit of things.....some more than others.....YES I'm referring to you Frank.....it takes balls to pull off that backless black dress look but you managed it in spades, and we have the photos to prove it!!!
For my part I was only too happy to get"suited and booted" fashion clothes horse I am not but I do own several suits.....you know just in case, weddings, funerals, christenings, bar mitzvahs, court appearances or Prom! and while I may well have looked like "Mutton dressed as Lamb" it made a pleasant change get dressed up and not as my mother would say"look like you've been dragged backwards through a hedge"!!!

Growing up in London Prom was not a part of the high school experience so here I was at 49 going to my first ever Prom, who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks! I suspect had I grown up this side of the pond I may not have gone to Prom, you could list my dates on a postage stamp and still have room for "Old Glory" so I somehow doubt I'd have been renting a tux or limo muchless buying my date a corsage!!!
If you go onto Sex Dwarf's Facebook page Robert has as always added the evenings playlist, almost  six and a half hours of music.....and neither OMD'S "If You Leave" or The Psychedelic Furs "Pretty In Pink" show up,two songs forever linked w/ Prom thanks to the John Hughes{all bow to the genius behind the Brat Pack movies}''Pretty In Pink" although OMD and The Furs are represented.

I always knew it was going to be crowded on the dance floor,it is at the best of times but tonite I was reminded of a line from the beginning of "The Warriors" about everyone "fighting for their little bit of turf"I'm just glad I got my final turn on"the box" early on b4 seeking sanctuary on "higher ground" up on the balcony for the last four hours where there was not only room to dance but I was lucky enough to strike up a conversation w/ a women in a stunning red dress, very nearly the ideal prom experience as we talked and dance till almost 2am above the seething mass that was the Club Fluid dance floor.
I wondered what would've happened if the Fire Marshall had shown up, if we weren't over the occupancy level we were close to it.
Here's the funny thing about that, usually take a confined space and add alcohol to it and you have a receipt for trouble and yet from my vantage spot up on the balcony it looked like everyone was getting along w/ one another, sure there might've been issues of treading on peoples toes and peoples personal space being invaded but by in large it seemed like everyone was getting along w/ everyone, this shouldn't be a surprise,we are the generation who supported Band Aid/Live Aid and "Do They Know It's Christmas" and "We Are The World" music has a way of bringing people of all walks of life together afterall.

As I made my way down the narrow staircase from the Fluid dance floor one last time to the exit I thought about the memories I've made here and the friendships I formed, finding like minded people who share a passion for the greatest decade of music ever, the 80's,you can't put a price on that and while a dozen of us went off to the South St diner to continue the evening there was a feeling of a chapter of our lives ending as we exited into the nite air.
As we left the diner{hey it was Prom isn't that part of Prom culture, dance and drink all nite and then go to a diner?!!}after 4.30am South St was deserted as we began to say our goodnites and go our respective ways home I couldn't help but laugh, here I am almost 50 pulling an "all nighter" the type of behaviour normally reserved for our teens and twenties and as I took my place w/ the "dawn patrol fraternity" on the trolley back across Center City and University City to get home at 5.45am twenty four hours and five minutes after I'd gotten up in the morning to begin my day I thought about the nites I'd done that way back when,at least at almost 50 I don't have to explain my actions to my parents anymore!!!

One final foot note on the whole evening,I began clubbing  back in 82-83 when I was 19/20 and one song that could always fill the dance floor was the seminal Pigbag classic "Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag",I still own a 12'' vinyl copy of it,it's just one of those songs you can't help but "get your groove on to" no matter where you are, standing in line at the DMV,the bank where ever it's infectious and hearing it again even for the umpteenth time on Friday and seeing the packed dance floor revelling to it's undeniable dance ability confirmed my whole hearted belief that music is the greatest thing ever and while it won't continue for us at Club Fluid there will always be a DJ somewhere to play it and a dance floor filled w/ people to dance to it.

Electric Barbarella

I couldn't let yesterday news of Milo O Shea death pass w/out making an obvious Duran Duran reference!
While I've never actually seen the Jane Fonda movie{it's on a long list of movies I need to see trust me!} I thought the timing was some what ironic as only last Thursday after the Duran Duran nite at DJSC I watched the Russell Mulcahy directed Arena{An Absurd Notion} dvd where Milo O Shea recreated his role as Doctor Durand Durand.
If you've never seen "Arena" it's worth checking out,a unique take on the obligatory run of the mill standard live concert footage and a lasting memory of Milo O Shea

Thunder From Down Under

For whatever reason Icehouse never enjoyed the worldwide success that fellow Aussies INXS enjoyed which is a shame because Icehouse were and still are a kick arse band! I discovered Iva Davies and company in 1982 when  "Hey Little Girl" became a top 20 hit in England,quite how previous singles "Can't Help Myself""We Can Get Together"Walls""Icehouse""Love In Motion" and "Great Southern Land" had failed to chart was and still is beyond me,interestingly "Icehouse" was a minor hit here in the US reaching #28 in the Billboard 100 and remains one of my all time favourite songs,written about a half way house for psychiatric and drug rehab patients which  Iva had lived  opposite,the subsequent video was directed by Russell Mulcahy who would go onto direct the classic "Wild Boys" video for Duran Duran and several other other their hits,he also directed the classic Ultravox "Vienna" video.{watch this space for a blog entry on Russell Mulcahy directed videos!!}

I was lucky enough to catch Icehouse live, they played The Lyceum in either 82 or 83 I can still remember Iva Davies placing a lit cigarette in the neck of his guitar b4 introducing the song "Icehouse" as "a song about vanity and bow ties" I had no idea what that meant then and still don't now but it's amazing that of all the ad libs singers have utter in over thirty years of concert going that one still resonates w/ me!

It would e another five years b4 Icehouse had UK success w/ "Crazy" but here in the US "No Promises" had been a hit in 85 and "Cross The Border" a year later, meanwhile  both "Crazy" and "Electric Blue"went top 10 in 87 but ths would prove to be the final hurrah for them in America and while "My Obsession" would get to #5 in the Australian charts this too marked the end of mainstream chart success although "Touch The Fire" reached #13 in 89 and "Miss Divine" reached #16 a year later.

An album of remixes "Code Blue" 93 an album of covers "Berlin Tapes"Icehouse in the public eye at least,"Berlin" contained the Bowie classic "Heroes" that I had first heard in 83 as a bside to the single "Uniform" and if memory serves helped Icehouse land some opening dates on the european leg of Bowie's "Serious Moonlight" tour.
Iva's solo cd 1999's "The Ghost Of Time" saw the title track wind up on the soundtrack of the Russell Crowe's "Master And Commander" film score in 03 while Icehouse were inducted into the ARIA{Australian Recording Industry Association} Hall Of Fame in 06 two years later Davies would be a guest on the Seven Network tv show"Battle Of The Choirs" and Icehouse performed "Great Southern Land" on the finale and a year later performed at famed Sydney cricket ground as part of the Sound Relief benefit concert for the victims of the Victorian Bushfire Crisis.

In 2011 to mark the bands 30th anniversary{although technically b4 Icehouse in 81 they were called Flowers in 77 through 81}they released "White Heat 30 Hits" which I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking to discover Icehouse,I'd also suggest splurging a little extra for the 3 disc version which contains a dvd of their singles but beware unless you have an all region dvd player it won't play, unless you want to watch it on your pc,personally my pc monitor is only 17' and my tv is 46' so I bought an all region dvd player!!
While the 30th anniversary lead to some live shows in their native Australia as yet no word on a US tour....we can only hope I guess!

Keeping The Art Of The Mix Tape Alive

Like the Ark and the Rubik Cube b4 it the Mix Tape has sadly gone the way of Dinosaur, once a proud symbol of 80's culture it has fallen down the pecking order of how we choose to listen to our music, don't get me wrong I fully embrace I Tunes, the I Pod,and Spotify but there was just something about the C90 Mix Tape that just screamed 80's.

When I got back into the habit of reading again on a regular basis in Sept 2010 Rob Sheffield's book,"Love Is A Mix Tape" was the first book I ordered from Amazon a heart felt tale of his relationship w/ his ex wife who died in his arms of a Pulmonary Embolism, the book traced their relationship from beginning to end and feature the mix tapes they sent each other while they were dating one another but in separate locations,it was a bitter sweet reminder of my own experience when I first met my ex wife Erica,I lived in London while she lived in Philly and I would often send her mix tapes during January 85 till March 86 when we were able to live together in London b4 eventually moving to Philly in October 87.
Several of those songs plus others after our separation and subsequent divorce feature in the collection "Songs In The Key Of E" a collection of mix tapes that I've compiled over the years as I came to terms w/ the fact that in the immortal words of Level 42 "and I suppose you're leaving me now".

Another good book on mix tapes is "Cassette From My Ex:Stories And Soundtracks From Lost Loves" a collection of mix tapes and stories of relationships gone south,we've all been there and the old adage that "misery loves company" was never more appropriate in this book, another one I'd recommend.

Even though the Mix Tape has gone the way of the eight track{readers of this younger than 30 maybe left pondering "what the hell is an 8 track!!!}I still own racks of cassette tapes several of which are of the mix tape variety, having already used "Dragon Rock" and "Pale,Paddy And Proud" in my blog I thought I'd feature my favourite collection of the bunch,a 7 tape collection simply called "80's".
The criteria was simple one song each of my favourite 80's artists,I tried to keep it in alphabetical order as best I could some letters had more bands than others {S was a popular letter} and some letters only yielded a few artist.
I don't remember exactly when I put this collection together, late 90's early 20's and I fully accept there are artists missing that now I've grown to love Grace Jones,Erasure,Devo,Kraftwerk but otherwise I think it's a pretty good representation of the 80's,here's volume one enjoy!

Kid In A Candy Store

Hard to believe living in this era of all things digital that sitting listening to the radio for four hours can be SO rewarding but that's what WXPN'S monthly homage to the 80's "Land Of The Lost" is to me.
I've been a loyal listener to XPN for at least eight years now and I often heard the djs mention Robert Drake's monthly trip back into the 80's but never took the time to check it out{bows head in shame!}
Fate intervened in August 2011,following the infamous Berlin show at World Cafe Live where Robert was due to dj b4 Berlin but didn't since Terri Nunn decided she didn't want 80's music b4 they went on stage I was now faced w/ an hour to kill b4 the show.....

As luck would have it I struck up a conversion w/ the person standing to my right,Eric a regular in the "Land Of The Lost" chatroom and also "Sex Dwarf" the other monthly 80's extravaganza that Robert Drake hosts, upon leaving World Cafe Live I bumped into Eric again outside who was talking w/ Marilyn another "Land Of The Lost" chatroom devotee and also co dj w/ Robert at "Sex Dwarf"  if this was the universes way of telling me to start checking out both nites I was listening....
W/in a few weeks I was checking out my first "Land Of The Lost" and a week later my first "Sex Dwarf".....I haven't looked back since!!!

For an 80's music lover like myself "Land Of The Lost" is mana from heaven four hours of 80's music that always leaves me wanting more, but as I've been saying since becoming a regular twenty months ago if you're only listening to "Land Of The Lost" you're only getting half the fun,the chatroom is a riot, usually a dozen or so regulars can be found in there each final  Friday of the month swapping good natured banter w/ eachother, such is my love of the chatroom that when I discovered my pc was on the blink this past Friday rather than just stay home and listen to LOTL on the radio I made the hour long commute from home to work to slip into my office and fire up the radio and pc..........
To my utter chagrin I discovered my access to WXPN had been blocked.....AGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It speaks volumes of my love of ''Land Of The Lost" and the chatroom I would even consider going back to work just to be in the chatroom and while being blocked was a kick in the teeth thanks to the "Land Of The Lost" Facebook page I was able to be somewhat interactive and managed to get Robert to play "East At Easter" by Simple Minds which seemed fitting since it was Good Friday afterall!
I'm not about to type the 51 songs that Robert played,if you're so inclined to see what filled those four hours go to the "Land Of The Lost" Facebook and check it out for yourself but here's a dozen bands that were featured:
The Cure
Japan
Depeche Mode
Siouxsie & The Banshees
Berlin
Bauhaus
Psychedelic Furs
Joy Division
Duran Duran
Simple Minds
OMD
Echo & The Bunnymen
    See you next month!
